Students will learn organic, inorganic and physical chemistry - students will learn both theory and be involved in chemistry workshops . Students will learn how modem chemistry can be used to improve our lives and how chemistry is essential for food, health, energy clean air (reduce pollution). water and how chemical  technology can be used to reduce climate change and CO2 emission and how chemistry can be used to reduce Global Warming.

The study of matter is a diverse and interesting subject as it gives us clues on making our lives better and more comfortable.

LITE Legal Summer School’s two-week chemistry course aims to introduce 13-15 year olds to the exciting study of chemistry. It is ideal for those students are taking or about to take GCSE / IGCSE , IB  or Equivalent level in school in the UK or International Schools abroad and who would  enjoy chemistry and would like to cover the the whole GCSE / IGCSE. IB Syllabus and more in a 2 or 4 week period.

In this program, students will engage in lecture and workshop activities that help build confidence and knowledge on the subject matter—which are important in helping to cement the fundamental chemistry principles in their understanding. The topics are designed in a way that nurtures the usual lessons taught in school, with many supplementary material for students to get ahead among their peers. The workshops will include lab activities, puzzles, debates, and even a bit of problem solving to ease students into the field. There will also be tours in plants near the area so that students can get a glimpse of the chemical process industry in London.

Students that want to try something different, and experience a productive summer will make the most out of this Summer School Chemistry class. Who knows, your career in chemistry might just start here!

Summer School Chemistry Programme

Academic content

The bulk of the program will deal with topics regarding inorganic and organic chemistry and its fundamental subjects.Topics are based on lessons that are typically taught in regular school semesters at GCSE / IGCSE syllabus and level and will, with additional lessons to broaden the students’ perspectives.

Each day of the program will be composed of a morning and an afternoon session. The morning sessions will focus on lectures, while those in the afternoon will be workshops related to the said lectures. Workshop activities may either be done in groups or individually, depending on the nature of the activity. Debates, class reports, and group brainstorming sessions are some of the activities that may occur during the afternoon sessions.

LITE Regal’s Chemistry Summer School Program bridges learning within the classroom and real life by letting students take field trips. These field trips will let those enrolled in the summer Chemistry course have a glimpse of some of the future careers in the UK if one pursues the field.

Sample Academic timetable

First week
Morning:

Lecture on the history of chemistry. Includes important scientific developments by Antoine Lavoisier, Niels Bohr, Robert Boyle, Democritus, Joseph Priestly, John Dalton, Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac, J. J. Thomson, and Ernest Rutherford, among others.

Afternoon:

Workshop: Students are given two packs of pictures: one pack contains pictures of scientists discussed in class while the other pack contains their discoveries/inventions. This can be done in as many groups as the instructor deems appropriate.
Morning:

Topics: Units of measurement, significant figures, uncertainty in measurement, dimensional analysis

Afternoon:

Workshop: Students are given sheets in which they are to convert figures often used in chemistry. They are then given situations and data in which they are to discern if the person in the given situation has committed an error related to the lesson or not (such as using significant figures more than what is read from the used apparatus).
Morning:

Topics: Temperature, Density, Pressure, and Classification of matter

Afternoon:

Workshop: Students are given a situation in which they are to apply the relationship between density and matter. An example situation may be three balloons, with one balloon up high, another a bit closer to the ground, and one mid-air, although they were released at the exact same time. Students are then given choices on the gas that may be inside each balloon and are to debate on the appropriate gas on each balloon.
Morning:

Topics: Fundamental laws of chemistry (law of conservation of mass, law of definite proportion, law of multiple proportion), Dalton’s atomic law

Afternoon:

Workshop: Students can do this in a lab or in a classroom setting. Each student/pair is given a Ziplock bag, and two plastic cups. Baking soda and vinegar are available for students to utilize. Each student/pair is to half-fill one cup with vinegar and the other cup with baking soda. The Ziplock bag, and both cups are weighed with a weighing apparatus (a top-load balance is preferable). Record the weight. Putting both cups within the bag, without spilling their contents. The bag must then be sealed. After sealing the bag, the vinegar is poured into the cup containing baking soda. After the reaction, the sealed plastic bag is weighed, and its weight is recorded. Ask students to compare the weight of the bag before and after the experiment.
Morning:

Topics: Electromagnetic radiation, photoelectric effect, the Bohr model, the quantum mechanical model of an atom, quantum numbers, orbital shapes and energies

Afternoon:

Outdoor activity: Students are to visit a chemical process plant. They have to ask about the chemicals produced in the plant, or the chemicals that are needed in production. They are then to identify the major atoms present in the components in a paper to be submitted in the next meeting.
Second week
Morning:

Topics: The Periodic Table, Aufbau principle, periodic trends in atoms

Afternoon:

Workshop: Students are given worksheets in which they are to create orbital diagrams for various atoms. Students are then encouraged to explain possible characteristics of the atom based on its location in the periodic table and the known trends.
Morning:

Topics: Atomic mass, Moles, Molecules and ions, molar mass

Afternoon:

Workshop: The class is to be divided into two groups. Both groups are to solve a mystery case by determining the mystery molecule in the case. The case may be based on a real-life or fictional event, and must have a chemical compound as the main clue to the mystery. The unknown element must have a molar mass that is found in other compounds. The class is given two molecules as options. Each group must present one of the options and debate on why that option is the most suitable one in the situation.
Morning:

Topics: Types of chemical bonds, bond polarity, covalent chemical bond

Afternoon:

Workshop: Each student is given a card with a corresponding element. Each student is then made to speed date with other students, in order to find an element/s in which they can form a compound. The students then fill up a ‘bonding sheet’ in which he/she draws a dot-and-cross diagram of their compound. After all students have formed compounds, each compound is to be presented and have their bonds explained.
Morning:

Topics: Acids and bases, chemical reactions and equations, naming simple inorganic compounds

Afternoon:

Workshop: Students may perform this activity by pair or individually in a laboratory setting. Each pair/group must be given a few red and blue litmus papers. They are then made to check among a few substances their acidity/alkalinity. These substances are best to be household/everyday items such as orange juice or soap, although they must be not written as so in the containers, but rather as Sample 1, 2, and so on. The second part of the activity is a demonstration of the reaction of sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid by a trained professional. Students are required to take observations of the reactants prior to the reaction, and the product formed. They are then tasked to write the chemical equation for the reaction and name the inorganic product.
Morning:

Topics: Solutions and mixtures, calculating solution composition: molarity, molality, and weight percent

Afternoon:

Outdoor activity: Students are taken to a different chemical processing plant—may it be food, pharmaceuticals, etc. Students must observe the presence of liquid solutions required in the processing of the company’s product, and if so, are to take note of the usual equipment used to process them. Students are encouraged to ask questions about the importance of solution concentration and to engage with the company’s representative.
