Students will be with like-minded and high achieving individuals and through an exciting combination of tutorials and workshops followed by labs students will be introduced to the cutting edge aspects of Biology and Chemistry to build upon and supplement the knowledge they already have.

Academic content

Students will be taught and introduced to the traditional Biology and Chemistry fields – In Chemistry:organic, physical and inorganic chemistry and Biology: characteristics of living organisms, genetics and inheritance, reproduction. From the foundation taught in the first week through a series of hands-on workshops and tutorials in the second week students will be introduced to recent fields and advances of the  Biology and Chemistry strand. They will explore how recent advances in the biological sciences, from genetic engineering, cloning and stem cells to immunology and pathology, have changed the way we view the world. Students will be taught by leading scientific tutors and have workshops and hands-on practical activities giving them the chance to take the lead in using cutting-edge research techniques and investigate how our understanding of Biology and Chemistry can revolutionise the way the real world problems are tackled.

The course will bring in topics in molecular biology including: DNA sequencing, DNA/RNA chemistry, gene cloning, genetic engineering, manipulation of bacteria, bacterial transformation, isolation of plasmid and recombinant DNA, restriction analysis of DNA, DNA sequencing and DNA fingerprinting.

How the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society will be taught. Students will have plenty of practical experience  included to encourage the enjoyment of the study of Chemistry and Biology and enhance understanding.
